Making a
science of hot meals and cool drinks
AIMEE JUAREZ

MANATEE - No one ever stops to contemplate the
technology that keeps food fresh.
Tempra Technology Inc. is one company that helps
make that happen. The 12-year-old company is devoted
to the research and development of self-heating,
self-cooling and self-refrigerating technologies for
the food and beverage industry and health care
markets.
While the company is working on products such as a
self-heating beverage can, a ration heater for
military meals-ready-to-eat and self-heating
packages for convenience foods, they have already
won awards for earlier innovations, such as the
self-chilling beverage can.
As a result, the Manatee Economic Development
Council named Tempra Technology the recipient of the
2003 Industry of the Year Technology Award, which
recognizes a technology-oriented business that
designs, develops, manufactures and adds value to
intellectual products.
Armed with a team of scientists and engineers,
Tempra has a research laboratory, an in-house pilot
manufacturing facility that develops various
prototypes, and has the ability to provide limited
production of the company's products.
Tempra has introduced its self-heating and
self-cooling products on a limited basis to select
markets.
In June 2000, Tempra reached an agreement with a
leading manufacturer of MREs, which are sold to the
U.S. military, to license the Tempra innovation for
heaters so soldiers can have hot meals anywhere.
Using the same technology, Tempra is developing
working prototypes of a self-heating beverage can
for soups, coffee and other beverages.
