Bradenton,
Florida -- Tempra Technology, a leading developer
of proprietary self-heating and self-cooling technologies,
announced today that it has entered into a collaborative
licensing agreement with SOPAKCO, the leading U.S. Military's
MRE (Meals Ready to Eat) provider since the 1940's.
Tempra and SOPAKCO are working together to potentially
replace the current heating unit included with military
rations with a safer, faster and more user-friendly
technology for warming portable meals, utilizing Tempra's
patented self-heating technology.
Tempra's
technology will heat a MRE to approximately 140
degrees Fahrenheit in 10 to 12 minutes and will replace less
convenient heating units currently available. The new
technology is lightweight, safe and completely self-contained.
"A
soldier can still be on the move while heating his or
her dinner," states Barney J. Guarino, President and
CEO of Tempra Technology. "The technology currently
being used requires the soldier to take several preparatory
steps, including adding water and keeping the unit stationary
during the heating process. The Tempra heating technology
is completely self-contained and does not release any
gases or require adding water. The new MRE heater will
be undergoing field testing later this year."
SOPAKCO
has produced the US Military's MRE's (formerly "K-Rations")
since World War II. The US Military has been challenged
with how to supply the troops with hot meals, safely,
while in the field. The current method involves combining
chemicals in a bag with a specific amount of water and
keeping the unit stable for the 15 minutes it requires
to heat the meal. Furthermore, vapors released by the
existing heater contain hydrogen, a highly flammable gas.
The
Tempra self-heating technology activates with a simple
squeeze. The packaged meal is wrapped in the heating
pack and placed back in its package. The meal can then
be easily carried in a jacket pocket while the meal
heats.
"Once
we started talking to Tempra and saw the possibilities
of submitting this new technology to the customer, the
project really just took on a life of its own," states
SOPAKCO President, Lonnie Thompson. "Working with Tempra
has enabled us to offer a unique, superior product to
our client."
Tempra
Technology is now applying their technology to heat
consumer hand-held foods. According to Guarino, Tempra
Technology is looking at several commercial applications
for its self-heating technology, including warming dips
for chips, and self-contained soups, chilies, stews,
coffee, hot cocoa and shelf-stable meals.
"We
have developed a portable, completely non-toxic, safe
way to heat food on-the-go. Box lunches don't have to
be cold anymore," states Guarino. "This technology will
take convenience meals and snack foods to places microwaves
and stoves cannot go."
SOPAKCO
has been in business for more than fifty years and
is considered a world leader in the design, processing,
packaging, storage and distribution of shelf-stable
processed foods. SOPAKCO began in 1943 as Burns
and Associates of Greeneville, Tennessee, packaging
military rations for Allied troops during World
War II.
